Itinerary
Arrive in Paro by Druk Air, with breathtaking views of the mountains and landscapes during the flight. Upon arrival and completion of visa formalities, you will be greeted by our Bhutanese representative and transferred to your hotel.
Explore Paro’s historical landmarks, starting with the ruins of Drugyel Dzong, strategically located to protect the valley from Tibetan invasions in the 17th century. On clear days, you can enjoy views of Mount Chomolhari (7,320m) towering above the fortress. Continue to the National Museum, housed in a former watchtower, showcasing Bhutanese culture and history spanning centuries. Take a short walk downhill to Rinpung Dzong, which serves as the administrative center and monk school, before crossing the traditional wooden bridge into Paro Town.
Enjoy a scenic drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, along well-maintained roads. Upon arrival, check into Hotel Druk or River View. Visit the Memorial Chorten, built in memory of King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the Changangkha Monastery dating back to the 15th century, and the Motithang Mini Zoo to see Bhutan’s rare national animal, the takin. Continue to the Drupthob Nunnery and spend some free time exploring the local market.
In the morning, visit the Painting School, National Library, Royal Goldsmith Workshop, and Handicraft Centers to experience Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage. After lunch, embark on a 3-hour drive to Wangduephodrang, crossing the scenic Dochula Pass (3,100m). On clear days, enjoy panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas, including Bhutan’s highest peak, Mt. Gangkar Punsum (7,520m). The descent into the warmer valleys of Lobesa offers a contrast to the high-altitude landscapes. Stop by Wangduephodrang Dzong and explore the market area before returning to Thimphu.
Take a day trip to the Gangtey Gompa at 2,800m, the only Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan. The valley, home to the rare Black-Necked Cranes, serves as a winter sanctuary for the migrating birds. Locals follow strict rules to avoid disturbing the cranes. Explore the picturesque valley and visit the monastery before returning to Thimphu.
Drive to Punakha and visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, which served as Bhutan’s capital until 1955. The dzong, situated at the confluence of two rivers, has withstood floods and fires throughout its history. The Punakha Serda procession, held each February, commemorates Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan forces. Afterward, drive to Thimphu for lunch, and then head to Paro, visiting Simtokha Dzong, the oldest dzong in Bhutan.
Embark on a rewarding hike to the Taktsang Monastery viewpoint. The 2–3 hour uphill trek passes through pine forests and villages. The monastery, perched on a cliff 800m above the Paro Valley, was severely damaged by fire in 1998 but has been meticulously restored. For those seeking a less strenuous option, horses are available for hire at an extra cost. Return to Paro in the evening and relax.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport, where our guide will assist you with departure formalities for your onward journey
